Automation refers to the process of using mechanical equipment to perform tasks that a human would normally do.

Robotics refers to the actual equipment that is used to perform the tasks.

Robots can do the jobs that a human normally does or improve the process such as IoT security devices like cameras that can automatically detect any motion and communicate that activity to the necessary authorities, or like an IoT refrigerator that can monitor the types of foods in the refrigerator, track expiration dates, and notify the house owner if specific foods are low and need to be replenished.

IoT devices play an important part of all automation and robotics concepts since all technological equipment used to perform a function must use IoT sensors to understand the surrounding area, gather information, and control its environment in order to function and make decisions.
