The basic IoT definition refers to a device that is used to detect, gather, and transmit data. IoT refers to the Internet of Things also understood as Internet enabled devices.

It is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, or objects that are provided with the unique ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

In other words, IoT is a network or a collection of several devices or objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their external environment, connecting people, data, and things.

The Internet of Things is simply "A network of Internet connected objects able to collect and exchange data." Let's consider the typical functionality of an IoT device, such as a smart home device to regulate temperature, like Google Nest or other IoT temperature regulators.

First, Information or data is captured and collected in an automatic and efficient manner. Thus the Iot temperature device automatically and continuously detects the household temperature.

Secondly, the data is then processed or interpreted to signify something. The IoT temperature device locally interprets the data captured and compares it to its settings.

Thirdly, The outcome results in an action that is taken either by human or computer function. Based upon its comparison, the IoT temperature device can either automatically activate the air-conditioning unit to increase the cooling function or turn off the system.

Finally, The data is then stored and collected in the Cloud for future use and further analysis.

Once the temperature has been adjusted, the IoT temperature device transmits that data using WiFi to an Internet cloud for cloud processing and further analytics. This finally step creates historical data that can be used to determine peak performance hours in temperature regulation for the household. This can result in energy savings and expense reductions. The historical temperature data is also displayed through an online dashboard.
